One of my favourite pieces of 2006, I drew this in Stromness, Orkney, a group of islands off the north coast of Scotland. It was late in the evening and I was looking over the bay at the cloudless sky. The colours here are not exaggerated - this really is what the sky looked like that evening. It's a beautiful, peaceful corner of the world, something I've tried to catch in the artwork.

I used soft Conté pastels on professional pastel paper for this, blending the various colours in gently, the only sharp line coming from the hills on the other side of the bay, turned a dark red/brown by the dusk. The pastels have been sprayed with fixative to stop smudging; the location and date of the drawing are written in pencil on the back of the piece.
