In 2009 Roman Kroke illustrated the diaries of the Dutch Jew Etty Hillesum (1914-1943) for the documentary movie "The Convoy" (Louvranges Broadcast/Belgium), sponsored by the European Commission and the Jewish Foundation of Belgium. Amongst others the movie was shown on the leading European Culture Channel ARTE (January 2010). Kroke’s illustrations have been exhibited in Minsk/Belarus (sponsored by the Goethe-Institut) and form a permanent exhibition at the Etty-Hillesum-Research-Centre/University of Ghent (Belgium), under the direction of the leading scholar in this field, Prof. Dr. Klaas A. D. Smelik. Kroke held lectures about his Hillesum-Illustrations for the Yeshiva University HSB, New York (USA) and the University of Bergamo (I) - for details see www.Roman-Kroke.de.

The illustration #1 "The Spider and its Web" interprets the following citation:
(the pages refer to: “Etty Hillesum, An interrupted Life and Letters from Westerbork”, Henry Holt and Company, First Holt Paperbacks edition 1996, New York (USA).

“I want to get to know this century of ours inside and out. I feel it everyday anew. I run my fingertips along the contours of our age (...) I make myself confront everything that crosses my path, which sometimes leaves me feeling battered. It is just as if I let myself crash violently into myself, leaving dents and scratches. (...) I also have the feeling that all the problems of our age and of mankind in general have to be battled out inside my little head.“ 4th of September 1941
(p. 45)

“I wish I could live for a long time so that one day I may know how to explain it, and if I am not granted that wish, well, then somebody else will perhaps do it, carry on from where my life has been cut short. And that is why I must try to live a good and faithful life to my last breath: so that those who come after me do not have to start all over again, need not face the same difficulties. Isn‘t that doing something for future generations?“
3rd of July 1942
(p. 154)

“I shall try to convey to you how I feel (...). When a spider spins its web, does it not cast the main threads ahead of itself, and then follow along them from behind? The main path of my life stretches like a long journey before me and already reaches into another world. As if I (...) was now helping to build a new and different society.“
3rd of July 1943
(p. 295)

Annotation to the illustration by Roman Kroke:
In her diary Etty actually tries to explain her motives for writing the diary: She compares her work of writing the diary with the one of a spider spinning its web. She wishes that the ideas and findings documented in her diary will reach out into another world, a future world. She considers herself a contemporary witness and conveyor of findings. In this function she expresses a strong feeling of responsibility towards future generations. With her diary she wants to cast out a thread which future generations may pick up, so that her spiritual legacy may serve in building a new, a better society. This comparison between “her = the spider“ and “her diary = the spider‘s web“ has become my central metaphor which you can retrace in many of the other illustrations. The faces found at the top of the illustration in the right-hand corner were inspired by original sketches Etty drew in her diary.
