Product description

!!! SIGNED by the artist !!!

In 2009 Roman Kroke illustrated the diaries of the Dutch Jew Etty Hillesum (1914-1943) for the documentary movie "The Convoy" (Louvranges Broadcast/Belgium), sponsored by the European Commission and the Jewish Foundation of Belgium. Amongst others the movie was shown on the leading European Culture Channel ARTE (January 2010). Kroke’s illustrations have been exhibited in Minsk/Belarus (sponsored by the Goethe-Institut) and form a permanent exhibition at the Etty-Hillesum-Research-Centre/University of Ghent (Belgium), under the direction of the leading scholar in this field, Prof. Dr. Klaas A. D. Smelik. Kroke held lectures about his Hillesum-Illustrations for the Yeshiva University HSB, New York (USA) and the University of Bergamo (I) - for details see www.Roman-Kroke.de.

To each illustration belongs a CITATION from Etty Hillesum’s diary as well as an ANNOTATION in which Kroke explains the concept behind the illustration. The citations & annotations are sent as a PDF-document via E-Mail.

The illustration #4 "Flowers" interprets the following citation:
(the pages refer to: “Etty Hillesum, An interrupted Life and Letters from Westerbork”, Henry Holt and Company, First Holt Paperbacks edition 1996, New York (USA).

“Many say, « How can you still think of flowers! »“ Last night, walking that long way home through the rain with blister on my foot, I still made a short detour to seek out a flower stall, and went home with a large bunch of roses. They are just as real as all the misery I witness each day.“
23rd of July 1942 (p. 188)

Annotation to the illustration by Roman Kroke:
For Etty the flowers bring some joy into her life. I transfered this idea: The RED brings colour into the black & white illustration. Please take a closer look at the clock in the background: With its profile and placement the clock virtually “sits“ at the table just like another person. I imagined the atmosphere in the room: the other people‘s incomprehension concerning Etty‘s love for flowers despite the hostile circumstances at that time - oppressive silence at the table - time elapsing, just interrupted by the ticking of the clock. In this setting the clock with its mechanical sounds obtains a brutal presence, just like another human being sitting at the table. On the clock it‘s twenty-four minutes to twelve. With the German saying “It is five minutes to twelve“ you express that something menacing is going to happen soon = at 12 o‘clock. At the time depicted on the illustration (23th of July 1942) the situation of Etty and her family has not reached this fatal point - not yet. This is the reason why on the clock it is still twenty-four minutes to twelve. But time will go on. About one your later, on September 7th 1943, Etty and her whole family will be deported to the concentration camp Auschwitz-Birkenau. According to a report of the Red Cross another three months later Etty dies (November 30th 1943).
