Product description

!!! SIGNED by the artist !!!

In 2009 Roman Kroke illustrated the diaries of the Dutch Jew Etty Hillesum (1914-1943) for the documentary movie "The Convoy" (Louvranges Broadcast/Belgium), sponsored by the European Commission and the Jewish Foundation of Belgium. Amongst others the movie was shown on the leading European Culture Channel ARTE (January 2010). Kroke’s illustrations have been exhibited in Minsk/Belarus (sponsored by the Goethe-Institut) and form a permanent exhibition at the Etty-Hillesum-Research-Centre/University of Ghent (Belgium), under the direction of the leading scholar in this field, Prof. Dr. Klaas A. D. Smelik. Kroke held lectures about his Hillesum-Illustrations for the Yeshiva University HSB, New York (USA) and the University of Bergamo (I) - for details see www.Roman-Kroke.de.

The illustration #6 "Travel Eastward" interprets the following citation:
(the pages refer to: “Etty Hillesum, An interrupted Life and Letters from Westerbork”, Henry Holt and Company, First Holt Paperbacks edition 1996, New York (USA).

“And then three days‘ travel eastward. Paper „mattresses“ on the floor for the sick. For the rest, bare boards with a bucket in the middle and roughly seventy people to a sealed car. A rucksack each was all they were allowed to take. How many, I wondered, would reach their destination alive?“
3rd of July 1943
(p. 293)

Annotation to the illustration by Roman Kroke:
In her diary Etty talks about “roughly seventy people to a sealed car“. You may observe a certain discrepancy between this number and the number of people depicted in the illustration. My decision to integrate far less people is due to the following: The planks breaking under the people‘s feet symbolise the approaching death. The bottomless, black world under the planks and in the front of the illustration represents the “realm of the dead“. The two men on the front corners are on their way into this dark world, many others have already perished and vanished there before. Etty repeatedly compares the circumstances they are living in with those of rats. The symbol of the rat I also applied in the illustrations # 7 “Freedom” und # 8 “Thinking Heart”.
