Product description

!!! SIGNED by the artist !!!

In 2009 Roman Kroke illustrated the diaries of the Dutch Jew Etty Hillesum (1914-1943) for the documentary movie "The Convoy" (Louvranges Broadcast/Belgium), sponsored by the European Commission and the Jewish Foundation of Belgium. Amongst others the movie was shown on the leading European Culture Channel ARTE (January 2010). Kroke’s illustrations have been exhibited in Minsk/Belarus (sponsored by the Goethe-Institut) and form a permanent exhibition at the Etty-Hillesum-Research-Centre/University of Ghent (Belgium), under the direction of the leading scholar in this field, Prof. Dr. Klaas A. D. Smelik. Kroke held lectures about his Hillesum-Illustrations for the Yeshiva University HSB, New York (USA) and the University of Bergamo (I) - for details see www.Roman-Kroke.de.

The illustration #7 "Freedom" interprets the following citation:
(the pages refer to: “Etty Hillesum, An interrupted Life and Letters from Westerbork”, Henry Holt and Company, First Holt Paperbacks edition 1996, New York (USA).

“If you have a rich inner life, I would have said, there probably isn‘t all that much difference between the inside and outside of a camp. Would I myself be able to live up to such sentiments? There are few illusions left to us. Life is going to be very hard. We shall be torn apart, all who are dear to one another. I don‘t think the time is very far off now. We shall have to steel ourselves inwardly more and more.“ 12th of March 1942
(p. 88)

“Many who are indignant about injustices are only indignant because the injustices are being inflicted on them. Their indignation is skin-deep. In a labor camp I should die within three days. I should lie down and die and still not find life unfair.“ 4th of July 1942
(p. 160)

Annotation to the illustration by Roman Kroke:
The illustration shows the arrival of the deportation train in the concentration camp Auschwitz-Birkenau. Still today over the entrance of the concentration camp you find the wrought-iron writing “ARBEIT MACHT FREI“ = “working makes (you) free“. Observing the letters thoroughly you can discover that the “B“ from “ARBEIT“ = “work“ is upside down - the big “belly“ of the letter is at the top, the little one at the bottom. The characters were manufactured by a Jewish prisoner. With the turned “B“ he meant to display the absurdity and lie of this message. When the Nazies asked him why he had placed the “B“ upside down, he is reported to have said that for him it was just a means of artistic expression. The “B“ actually remained unchanged. A tiny space left for his personal protest against the inhumanity of the system. The rails of the train ending into nothingness, in pitch-black once again stand for a way leading to death. They continue the symbolism already introduced in the illustration # 6 “Travel Eastwards”.
