!!! SIGNED by the artist !!! In 2009 Roman Kroke illustrated the diaries of the Dutch Jew Etty Hillesum (1914-1943) for the documentary movie "The Convoy" (Louvranges Broadcast/Belgium), sponsored by the European Commission and the Jewish Foundation of Belgium. Amongst others the movie was shown on the leading European Culture Channel ARTE (January 2010). Kroke’s illustrations have been exhibited in Minsk/Belarus (sponsored by the Goethe-Institut) and form a permanent exhibition at the Etty-Hillesum-Research-Centre/University of Ghent (Belgium), under the direction of the leading scholar in this field, Prof. Dr. Klaas A. D. Smelik. Kroke held lectures about his Hillesum-Illustrations for the Yeshiva University HSB, New York (USA) and the University of Bergamo (I) - for details see www.Roman-Kroke.de. The illustration #8 "Thinking Heart" interprets the following citation:
“At night, as I lay in the camp on my plank bed, surrounded by women and girls gently snoring, dreaming aloud, quietly sobbing and tossing and turning, women and girls who often told me during the day, «We don’t want to think, we don’t want to feel, otherwise we are sure to go out of our minds,» I was sometimes filled with an infinite tenderness, and lay awake for hours letting all the many, too many impressions of a much-too-long day wash over me (…). And that is what I want to be again. The thinking heart of a whole concentration camp.”
