Product description

!!! SIGNED by the artist !!!

In 2009 Roman Kroke illustrated the diaries of the Dutch Jew Etty Hillesum (1914-1943) for the documentary movie "The Convoy" (Louvranges Broadcast/Belgium), sponsored by the European Commission and the Jewish Foundation of Belgium. Amongst others the movie was shown on the leading European Culture Channel ARTE (January 2010). Kroke’s illustrations have been exhibited in Minsk/Belarus (sponsored by the Goethe-Institut) and form a permanent exhibition at the Etty-Hillesum-Research-Centre/University of Ghent (Belgium), under the direction of the leading scholar in this field, Prof. Dr. Klaas A. D. Smelik. Kroke held lectures about his Hillesum-Illustrations for the Yeshiva University HSB, New York (USA) and the University of Bergamo (I) - for details see www.Roman-Kroke.de.

The illustration #10 "Future":
Find a PREVIEW of the Illustration "Future" in the FIRST photo of the photo-gallery. Of course, the illustration sent will NOT have a "(c)" watermark. The other photos of the gallery give insights into different stages of the creation-period of the illustration and will NOT be sent.
To each illustration belongs a CITATION from Etty Hillesum’s diary as well as an ANNOTATION in which Kroke explains the concept behind the illustration. The citations & annotations are sent as a PDF-document via E-Mail.

The illustration #10 "Future" interprets the following citation:
(the pages refer to: “Etty Hillesum, An interrupted Life and Letters from Westerbork”, Henry Holt and Company, First Holt Paperbacks edition 1996, New York (USA).

“(…) we still have so much to experience together and so much work to do. And so I call upon you: sty at your inner post, and please do not feel sorry or sad for me, there is no reason to.”
3rd of July 1943
(p. 295)

Annotation to the illustration by Roman Kroke:
The illustration stands for November 30th 1943, the day when according to a report of the Red Cross Etty died in the concentration camp Auschwitz-Birkenau. Etty compared herself writing the diary with the work of a spider spinning its web. On the one hand, the illustration shows a spider‘s web - without the spider, which symbolises Etty‘s death. On the other hand, the spider‘s web is complete. With this I want to express that Etty‘s work, her diary (= the spider‘s web), had been completed on time before her death, so that it may serve future generations as a spiritual legacy of her findings.
You may also note a special relationship between the spider‘s web and the barbed wire fence: The barbed wire fence, as a means of keeping the prisoners from escaping, did indeed dominate on the material level - Etty died in Auschwitz. However, the spider‘s web as a metaphor for Etty‘s diary and findings survived and imposed itself on the spiritual level. The barbed wire fence even served the spider as a “construction frame“ of her web. With this I intend to highlight one of the basic principles of Etty‘s philosophy: not trying to avoid the atrocities of her time but looking for direct confrontation in order to be able to dissect them intellectually. This attitude I also displayed in the illustration # 3 “Fear” by drawing the spider directly on the officer’s shoulder. In summery, the last illustration “Future” therefore stands for a certain domination of the spiritual over the material level.
