The darkest winter time, kaamos, is finally ending, and after so many days of darkness you finally see the first sunbeams in the horizon. The light soon vanishes again, but you know that tomorrow the day will already be a bit longer. The darkness doesn’t seem that dark anymore, you can see the different tones of blue and violet in the horizon and in the shades of the snowy trees.

Kaamos is the Finnish word for the polar night, the darkest time of the year. During kaamos the sun doesn’t rise above the horizon in the polar circle. But even though there might be months with very little or no light, the darkness isn’t that dark after all; in the north the snow and the moon illuminate the night, and you can see the Northern lights dance across the starry sky.

The necklace is made of tagua seeds and silver and is about 28 cm (about 11 inches long). The snowflakes on the seeds are silverplated, but the rest of the metal is silver. Tagua is a seed that grows in the tropical rain forests in South America. It’s also called ivory nut or vegetable ivory, as it resembles the animal ivory. The ripe nuts are collected from the ground and dried, after which they become very hard.
