The subject, Dr. Whirlwind of the Cayuse tribe (Umatilla, Oregon,) was photographed around 1900. This would have made Whirlwind close to 75 years old. Whirlwind was known for his medicine dances while holding live rattlesnakes. Unfortunately, he was fatally bitten while performing what proved to be his final dance.
