Product description

Location: Gouda, the Netherlands.
Story behind the title: Witte Wieven or witte vrouwen ("white women") are creatures of Dutch folklore in ancient Germanic times. They were similar to druids of the Celts and were herbalists and wise woman taking care of ailments both physical and mental. It was said they had the talent for prophecy and looking into the future. They had a high status and ceremonies were held at grave sites to honour these white women. They were called white not as in the colour of their clothes but meaning wijsheid (wisdom), these honouring among the graves of the dead.

Christian teaching transformed white women into mistflarden: they became ghost witches — evil and to be avoided. Earlier medieval literature made them more like pranksters and pests.

When I was a child I read that newborn babies were supposed to be highly guarded the first few days of their lives as the witte wieven would otherwise come by and replace the baby with a sickly replica. This story has always stuck in my head (even though it's apparently more a story from the east of the Netherlands and I grew up in the west) and whenever I see mist I immediately think of the witte wieven disguised as mist coming to steal the babies.

Postage and payment policy

I will ship anywhere and by international priority mail. From experience I can tell you that shipping will usually take 2 to 10 business days depending on location, but please allow at least 20 business days for your package to arrive. I can combine shipping depending on items. Everything is packed securely and usually on their way to you within 2 to 3 days if not sooner.
I accept Paypal and bank transfers, but regretfully cannot offer postal insurance or tracking outside of France. If you really do wish to have tracking then please contact me BEFORE placing an order and I will get back to you with the correct shipping quote. Please remember that this will not be cheap thanks to La Poste and its high rates.
It's also possible for you to have cheaper shipping, your order will then be shipped by international economy. This is a lot slower than international priority and tracking cannot be added to this method. As stated above please contact me BEFORE placing an order and I'll get back to you with the cheaper shipping quote.
For French users and depending if you're going to combine several listings, Colissimo might be cheaper for you. This also depends on how bulky the items are. Again, please contact me!

I'm afraid I can't be held responsible for lost or damaged items after they've been shipped. Please do contact me in the event something does go wrong.

I always try to recycle shipping material (prints and cards however are always shipped in brand new and sturdy material), but please let me know if you'd rather have me use new shipping material to send your items!
