Vintage Indonesian batik painted textile weaving - amyjodesigns

This textile could be used as a unique table runner, wall hanging or even as a scarf (even though you wouldn't see the design, the colors are beautiful!).

This piece features the Barong near the bottom of the design. The Barong is a very important character in the mythology of the Balinese people. He is a protector spirit and is depicted as the good that battles over evil and wins.

This vintage textile was first handwoven, then hand painted in the traditional batik style, which involves using melted wax as a way of painting around the negative space. For example in this textile (as with many batiks) you can see the outline is white, as this is the part of the textile that doesn't have any painting on it, while each of the other colors have been painted in layers.

Textiles such as these are typically handwoven by the women, an ancient art typically passed down from mother to daughter. Part of the proceeds for the sale of this piece goes to support Threads of Life to keep this cultural art alive. http://www.threadsoflife.com/index.asp

This textile is in quite good condition with only a couple spots that contain small pin-like holes (possibly a splattering of an acid or something?), but this is not visible unless you hold the piece up to light. When it is hanging, or lying on a table, these tiny holes are not at all visible.
