Design-Shirt · Thylacine - xtinct
Tasmania · xtinct since 1936 · designed by Beatrice Barth (Leipzig)
Being the largest terrestrial predator, the Thylacine occupied a very important ecological niche in many Australian habitats. Its disappearance from the Australian mainland is associated with the first colonisation by the Indigenous Australians and the subsequent environmental changes that they caused. Dingoes, the wild descendants of the indigenous population's dogs, reproduced in large numbers and competed with the Thylacine for both prey and habitat. In addition, rock art also portrays the hunting of the Thylacine by the Indigenous Australians themselves. Eventually limited to Tasmania, the species was initially safe on this island, until in the late 18th century, when European settlers, worried for the safety of their flocks of sheep, began to hunt and poison the Tasmanian tigers, leading to their ultimate extinction.
