Small Linen Basket with Dutch Folk Costume - P8 Accessories & Button ArtThis linen basket is inspired by my own Dutch heritage. Spakenburg is a fishing village at Lake IJsselmeer, which used to be the Zuiderzee Sea before 1930, in the province of Utrecht in The Netherlands. It is one of the few places left in the Netherlands where some women still wear local traditional clothes. The kraplap or bodice of the Spakenburg woman is the most striking part of her costume; it's made of a handpainted cotton and fully stiffened, which makes it look like a giant collar; the red checkered vertical stripe in the middle, is the shawl folded into a strip only in such a way that the kraplap is fully visible. I cross-stitched a tiny couple from Spakenburg and hand-stitched it on pure linen; the linen is from a very rarely used unbleached linen tablecloth. Then I sewed a little basket or bowl from the linen, made it stiff with some webbing and lined it with a black and white traditional Dutch cotton fabric (my own bed-clothes are still made from this fabric). Fill it with some sewing thread bobbins, or left-over buttons, or some delicious Dutch treat; possibilities are endless ! Payment can be done by Paypal and within the EU also by direct bank transfer. Details on request.
