Bag · Pig-footed Bandicoot - xtinctPIG-FOOTED BANDICOOT
The pig-footed bandicoot population decreased rapidly when European settlers began to colonise Australia. The Indigenous Australians only ever burnt down small areas of grassland for their individual purposes, which quickly regenerated. This patchwork of recently burnt and newly greened areas also provided food and shelter for the bandicoots. In contrast, the European settlers disrupted this practice of small scale slash-and-burn, and used extensive territories as pastures for their herds of sheep and cattle. This altered and eventually destroyed the bandicoots' habitat. Furthermore, newly introduced predators, and cats in particular, accelerated the pig-footed bandicoot's extinction. The last wild specimen was captured in 1901, although the species was occasionally sighted by Indigenous groups in western Australia until the 1950s.
