    Learn More About Aprons

Aprons are worn over the clothing as the first line of defense against spills, stains, and other potential damage. While a chef’s apron or kitchen apron is perhaps the most common type for cooks and bakers, aprons have many uses.

For instance, artists often wear aprons to protect their clothes from paint and other materials, while gardening aprons help safeguard clothes from dirt and mud while weeding the yard. There are also grilling aprons, utility aprons, and shop aprons that come in a variety of materials for heavy duty work.

There are many popular types of aprons on Etsy, ranging from classic white aprons to checkered aprons to vintage aprons to cooking aprons with pockets to stylish aprons for men and women. Here are a few common styles:

    • Bib aprons, also known as full aprons, typically cover the chest and waist, and tie at both the neck and back. This common apron style often falls to the mid-thigh, though it may be a bit longer or shorter.
    • Bistro aprons, another popular style, may also be called half aprons or short aprons. They have no top, and instead start at the waist. Bistro aprons vary in length from short to floor-length.
    • Waist aprons are similar to bistro aprons, and the terms are often used interchangeably. However, the main difference is that waist aprons are designed to cover only the waist, providing lightweight protection. This small apron style is especially popular in the restaurant industry as bartender and server aprons. It’s also popular for hair stylists.
    • Cross-back aprons, or no-tie aprons, have similar functionality to bib aprons but have no ties. Instead, they slip on like a sleeveless top or dress. These are also sometimes called Japanese-style or pinafore aprons.
    • Cobbler aprons are a unique upper-body style that's popular for crafting and in the hospitality and medical industries. These aprons are typically sleeveless, slip on over the head, and secure at the sides with ties or snaps. The main benefit of cobbler aprons is that they provide full protection of the front and back of your clothing while also allowing for freedom of movement in your arms.
