This beautiful stained glass rendition of a Common Loon is made in the copper foil Stained Glass method. It was inspired by a lonely Common Loon, that for some unknown reason did not migrate north in the spring, and now it is seen paddling in the saltwater canal behind our house each night at sundown. We picked glass that characterize the sunset in the sky and the reflection of the sky in the water. This is a hanging piece measuring 13.5 inches by 10.5 inches.
Did you know that:
• The Common Loon propels itself with its feet under water and swallows most of its prey underwater.
• Loons are water birds, only going ashore to mate and incubate eggs. Their legs are placed far back on their bodies, allowing efficient swimming but only awkward movement on land.
• The Common Loon is flightless for a few weeks after molting all of its wing feathers at the same time in midwinter.
