Mask Series I - West Coast Wonders
This short series, completed in India Ink with watercolor wash, is inspired by a napkin I used aboard Alaska Airlines en route to Seattle. The napkin was emblazoned with a vaguely Inuit design, suggesting a faint but unthreatening mythology or "folkiness" to the corporation, and the experience of flying Alaska Air. In this series I aim to ask "what exactly gives meaning and life to mythology?" In today's society, cultures blend, folktales are consumed by popular culture's homogenization, and symbols lie devoid of meaning. These masks represent an attempt to reach a greater meaning through storytelling and non-commercial folk influences.
