Product description

This is a functional, sculpted papier-mache box upon which sits an exotic bird, tending her nest and egg by moonlight.
The box, bird, nest and egg are all handmade from scratch.
The box stands on shaved and painted pencil legs. The bird's body is made from a one-off mould, used only for this piece. The top hat and moon are made freehand from papier-mache'd cardboard. The birds on the side are made from a one-off mould. The nest is layers of wood over an armature, made piece by piece, then lined with papier mache. The egg is hand-shaped from polymer and baked, then painted. The nest and egg can be stored inside the box. The birds are dressed in top hats and spats.
On the ends of the box are orangey-red stars, made from a one-off mould and inset with small mirrors.
Above the bird hangs a silvery moon on a piece of thin, curved wire. It bounces gently if you place it near a bit of breeze.
Entirely handpainted in layers of acylics and Indian ink. The inside of the box and also the underside are painted.

Size/Dimensions/Weight

The box measures 34 cm tall to highest point, lid and base are 19cm x 14 cm, box itself is 15.5 x 10 cm, the legs are 4.5 cm tall, the nest is approx 4.75 cm diameter and the egg is 2.5 cm long.
