Plastic vs. fabric shower curtains

Shower curtains come in both plastic and fabric options, often made from vinyl, cotton, polyester, and polyethylene. Choose from a variety of expressive and colorful patterns and transform your bathroom into an island paradise or a relaxing spa environment. However you decide to decorate, your shower curtain says a lot and is a great way to add personality to your space. Fabric shower curtains: Fabric shower curtains are easy to clean and make wonderful decorative bath accessories . However, they gather mold and mildew faster than plastic curtains. Plastic shower curtains: Plastic shower curtains are usually more resistant to mold and mildew. They stay clean longer and don’t require an inner liner, but they can’t be machine-washed.

Attaching your shower curtain to your shower depends on the type of shower rings you use. The most common are metal or plastic rings that open and close with a pinch of your fingers and loops that you tie on yourself. Matching the rings to your other bathroom decor is a nice way to tie everything together and foster your inner interior decorator. Try a set of shiny metal rings to match chrome accents on a sink top or a stainless steel towel rack . If you prefer loops or ribbons, get creative with the colors. Add a pop of deep blue to bring out a calm ocean feel or a soft lavender to help relax after a long day. Whatever type you choose, attaching the rings to the shower rod is usually a smooth process, especially when you have a friend to help. Using the power of pairs, have one person hold the curtain while the other connects the rings to the rod. If you’re doing it solo, try hanging both ends up first for added stability, then connect the rest to evenly distribute the weight.

What size shower curtain do you need?

Choose a shower curtain size so that it hangs about six inches above the ground. Shower widths vary, especially between shower stalls and bathtub-shower combinations. The standard shower stall is about 54-inches, while bathtubs are around 72-inches. Showers are typically about 72-inches high, but measuring your shower before picking your curtain prevents the need for trial and error.

How do you keep a shower curtain from getting dirty?

Your shower curtain will inevitably develop mold or mildew, but keeping your curtain clean is easy. Keep a spray bottle of distilled white vinegar in the bathroom, and lightly spray the curtain once a month. Leave it to dry overnight and wake up to a fresh curtain ready to go for another month. For fabric shower curtains, follow the washing machine instructions and add a stain remover like white vinegar to the wash. Hang to dry.
