My story, the emergence of New Swedish Design, begins in an airplane and the approach to Mumbai.
Before I founded New Swedish Design, I was a sales manager for machine tools and actually not satisfied with my job, although it was well paid and I could fly around the world for free – but that was too little challenge for me and shortly before the Midlife Crises (:-)) I was thinking about how to continue on this beautiful planet. Since I'm not a guy who can compensate for a midlife crisis with a convertible, I needed another solution to my problem.
After a long hard day's work in Kolkatta, which involved hours of filling out Excel spreadsheets, I sat in this plane and headed for my next destination. I was dissatisfied with myself and the world. The plane landed and I could look out from the window into the slums of Mumbai as they are directly adjacent to the airport runway. There I saw how the poorest of the poor celebrated a festival – they had fun and danced. And I, from rich Germany with a prestigious job that could have afforded anything compared to these people, was light years away from something like joy.
At that moment I made the decision to quit my job without having a new one in prospect. From a purely career point of view, this is of course a no-go and people in my immediate vicinity also had problems understanding this decision, especially if I had no answer to the question "What are you planning to do next?". Hello?..., Jürgen Klopp also had no right answer when he quit Dortmund ;-) But I knew that I needed a cut, because I was generally no longer sure whether I wanted to continue my life like this.
At some point I sat in front of my IKEA desk (aha!) and thought about my future. I had already bought and rebuilt a lot of IKEA furniture because I had always been an avowed IKEA fan – but of course I would never have thought that this passion would eventually become my purpose in life.
In my jobs, I had always worked with a "second screen", a screen in addition to my notebook, with the screen usually arranged above the notebook on a cardboard box. But the cardboard box was a bad solution and there were no monitor stands on the market (not even at IKEA) that matched my IKEA desk.
So I planned to build my own monitor stand and thought about how many of these desks IKEA had already sold...
That was the beginning of New Swedish Design!
In principle, New Swedish Design still works like this, but now most of the product ideas come from our fans, followers and potential customers themselves.
It's about turning good "IKEA furniture additional ideas" from individual people into products for everyone, because with the large number of IKEA furniture in circulation, a niche idea is always interesting for many other IKEA users.
And what do you need for your IKEA furniture...?
