Forum > Questions > Bank number/ bankleitzahl
Lightbluerose 10.07.2008 15:20At this moment I am trying to help two different buyers from Germany, both having problems with banktransfer.
They need a Bankleitzahl, (banknumber) but these just do not exist in Holland! No Dutch bank has a banknumber, these are only in Germany, Austria and some other countries.
To make confusion complete, I just couldn't complete my profile without filling in something, (anything) into that "banknumber"box, so for now I filled in 000, hoping people will understand that they don't need that.
I told my buyers that IBAN and BIC code should be enough, but at least one of them is still having trouble.
And, as I said, I can't give them a banknumber, we don't use these over here!
So what should I do, would it help if they would fill in XXX or 000?
elizabeth 10.07.2008 19:20hi Lightbluerose,
Yes in Germany banks have a number which is one piece of the necessary information you need to make a transfer - although to make a transfer to a bank outside of Germany I believe this number is not necessary.
Could you ask your buyer who is still having a problem to contact customer support: feedback [at] dawanda [dot] com? (They can write in German, the German team will receive their mail.)
We don't have specific information relating to individual banks, but we can try to help them figure out what's going wrong.
Lightbluerose 10.07.2008 19:43I have sent her a message this afternoon, asking if she has solved the problem, no answer yet. She was intending to go to her bank, to ask for help.
If it's not solved still, I will ask her to contact DaWanda, maybe you will find a way out....
Tizzalicious 25.07.2008 22:33Hi! I hope you will read this, Lightbluerose.
I have the same problem with a German buyer (I am also from Holland), and I was wondering if the problem got fixed for you?
himbeerrot 29.07.2008 15:05hello ,
I have got an bankaccount in the netherlands and one in germany (postbank) because I used to live in the netherlands . I never had a problem transfering money from one to the other using iban and bic until now , because my german bank somehow does not accept the bic/swift from my dutch bank anymore (ABN AMRO Rijswijk ):/ They say the bic I use does not exist but I just checked it on my dutch bankaccount and it is the right one it does exist :(
maybe your customers have/had a similair problem ?
I will contact my german bank about this problem soon and let you know what they say.(and excuse my bad english )
Lightbluerose 30.07.2008 08:28I'de be very happy with that, at this moment one of my customers has let me know she couldnt at any way get the money transfered, so that sale is already canceled, the other one wrote me she was still trieing, but since that is some weeks ago now, I'm afraid she hasn't succeeded eather....
TheBirdsInTheMeadow 30.07.2008 09:25Hi, I am selling from the UK and I also don't understand about the bank number. So I'll just have to fill it in with zero's too? I'm new and just made my first sale and how to fill in the bank details is far from clear. I'm guessing that if someone pays with paypal, I don't need all that stuff but still I can't fill in the form without putting something. So for now it has to be zeros. Anyone has better advice for me, please let me know :)
elizabeth 30.07.2008 12:15hi TheBirdsinTheMeadow,
"bank number" refers to the branch number of your bank. Your customers may not need it to transfer money to you from within the UK, your bank should be able to tell if they have a branch number and if it's necessary for you to supply it (it is a necessary piece of information for bank transfers within Germany for example).
For your customers who may be from the European Union, they only need your Iban and Bic (also called Swift) code.
Tizzalicious 03.08.2008 17:41I have the solution!
I filled in 6 zeros instead of the banknumber, and whenever someone makes a purchase I tell them they won't need a bank number to transfer money to Holland, as we don't use banknumbers. I tell them they only need by IBAN and SWIFT, and that if they can't make the payment without putting anything in back number, they should put the zeros.
All bank payments I received so far went through without problems :)
TheBirdsInTheMeadow 05.08.2008 11:40Thank you Elizabeth, I'm phoning my bank today! But one more question - if I just have paypal only as a payment choice, do I still need these numbers? And thanks for your working solution Tizzalicious, it's very reassuring :)
NicoleHill 05.08.2008 13:36I think in the UK, banks tend to call that number your sort code (it's a 6-digit unique identifier for the bank, no? Brain not working very well today...) - in my experience with my bank (which is often less than helpful), if you're not using exactly the terms they expect, they panic and can't help...
I wouldn't have thought you would need to give them here to use paypal - though you might need to give them to paypal at some point, if you haven't already.

Florcita 06.08.2008 13:45Hi this probably only works for dutch bank accounts
Use the website http://www.ibanbic.nl to look up your IBAN and BIC codes (also called SWIFT code) you get two codes:
IBAN: NL65 RABO **** **** **
BIC: RABONL2UNow the bank number is 65, the number behind the country code.
Tizzalicious 06.08.2008 17:33I read about that somewhere too, Florcita, but when I put it, my customer told me that it wasn't a working number because it only has 2 digits.
Florcita 07.08.2008 09:11Ah look at that. I called my bank and they said that is all they have and that they found it weird all this number asking because (since I live right on the border with Germany) people are constantly doing biz there and here and transfering money and they never got any questions about bank numbers.
Weird.
Tizzalicious 07.08.2008 11:14I think it's probably because you CAN do it without the number, but maybe most DaWanda buyers don't know?
Florcita 10.08.2008 09:41yeah, that is probably the case. Kinda complicates things up a bit, doesn't it?
Lightbluerose 10.08.2008 09:59Could it be that it's just one particular bank causing trouble? Those two buyers I mentioned earlier both didn't succeed, so I had them canceled, but last week I had some other payments from Germany by banktransfer, within a few days, without any hassle...
So it sure is possible.
Tizzalicious 11.08.2008 22:16I think that might be it LighBlueRose. Maybe they use online banking where you have to fill out the BLZ?
BlueBoxStudio 03.09.2008 19:58If I'm only taking payment by Paypal, do I need to worry about bank number, IBAN and Swift? I'm in the UK.
Tizzalicious 03.09.2008 21:15BlueBox, no, you won't have to worry about that. You will only need those when you accept bank transfers.
