Florcita 02.07.2008 14:05Hey there!
In this topic http://en.dawanda.com/topic/2/84446 an idea came up to help us sellers.
We were thinking about making, with contribution of all of us, a calendar with special dates so we all know when we have to wake up! sharpen our senses and attract buyers (more than ever). In other words... when is mother's day, father's day, summer vacations, back to school.... err... earth day, woman's day... Sinterklaas, Santa Claus, the three wise men, carnaval... whatever... all those special dates which are a commercial opportunity.
Some of them are worldwide known dates, some others aren't. Some vary from country to country.
For instance, in December in The Netherlands (I don't know if other countries too) we have Christmas, but also on the 5th, Sinterklaas. On both days presents are exchanged... which means a double chance for selling your products.So... what do you think? Should we make a calendar so we all know?? and maybe later it can be posted here and pined... or it becomes some referential feature for Dawanda... I will email this to the admins too, so they know.
feedback? I can't do it alone!
sweethartdesigns 02.07.2008 17:20That's a great idea! I think most dates like Mother's day etc have past, but here in the UK we have Halloween on 31st October, Guy Fawkes/Bonfire night is 5th November, which are great dates for those who make warm woollies etc to target. In Scotland on the 29th November it's St Andrew's Day.
Oh, the kids break up from school on the 22nd of August until 3rd September in my part of the world although this varies from region to region sometimes.
I'll put my thinking cap on and try to think of a few more relevant dates :)
Florcita 02.07.2008 19:27great Sweethart! at least there is two of us now!!! hahaha
LAngeEstLa 03.07.2008 16:58Great idea ! I'm willing to help with what I can, so that makes 3 of us ;o)
Here is France Mother's day is different from The US and most other countries. It's the last Sunday of May (but I'll check just in case, and report of there's change). School's out today, July 4th (YAY ! .... well, at least for the kids - the mom's among you may understand ;o) ). Today is also the 4th of July = independence day in the US = big "red-white-and-blue" time, so those are good colors to be thought out together for next year maybe.Back to school is September 2nd this year. So back to school articles are a nice idea.
In France, Independence day, AKA Bastille Day, is July 14 h - lots of fireworks then. Also Red-white and blue, but in a different order.
On the 3rd Thurday of November is Thanksgiving in the US.
Oh, they also love St. Patrick's day, you're supposed to wear green, and 3 leaf clovers are big. It's a holiday in Ireland. I think it's march 17th, but I'm not sure.
Halloween is Halloween. Christmas is Christmas. In Alsace, a region of France they have another date, early December, but I live very far from there so I don't know more. I think the exchange is mostly candy for the kids (and a whip if they were bad :o), the story calls the mean guy "le Père Fouetard" meaning "father whip", awful, hum ?! ). I'm sure someone from France can be of better help on that.
If I think of anything else I'll post back.
o:-)

SarasTextureCrafts 04.07.2008 09:18I found a site that lists public holidays around the world... could be a good starting point??? they would obviously need checking, as to what is relevant and what has been missed.

Hope it helps??
CauseIloveyou 04.07.2008 12:33ouah very good! this will help. Thanks Chris
Florcita 04.07.2008 18:42Great start Sara! Im going to check it out later. maybe people from different countries should take a look ... but this could be indeed a starting point and later we fill it out if needed!
PurrPrints 08.07.2008 21:29What a great idea...I'll be keeping my eye on this one.
i don't suppose any countries in Europe have any days aimed at pets, do they? I'm guessing not, but out of wild hope I thought I'd ask :)
Florcita 09.07.2008 07:54Int there an "animal day" or something of the kind?
CreateamLondon 14.07.2008 12:05Great idea. If any of you has outlook, you can download holidays by country. I am happy to help! Also, is there a possiblity to get gift lists together for those special occassions? I'd be happy to link to other shops on the day and vice versa.
lilycobweb 14.07.2008 13:46hi guys, here are another few dates for you-
March 21st is Naw-Ruz, -this is New Years Day for most Eastern and Middle-Eastern countries, and by implication, people from those countries who live in Europe.
Also it is New Year for members of the Baha'i Faith ( a few DaWanda buyers/sellers)
Angel, it's shamrock (those three-leaved clovers, but much smaller :)
There is another festival called Eid, (which involves gift-giving, as does Naw-Ruz) but cant remember the date.
Esthertie 15.07.2008 10:48We (in The Netherlands) celebrate Queensday the 30th of april. We celebrate the birthday of the queen (actually her real birthday is not that day). It's a big party in the whole country and everybody is dressed in orange. The party's start the evening before in a few big city's.
bellajean 16.07.2008 00:25I think this is a brilliant idea! I can help in any way...just give me a shout!
CynthiaVanHorneEhrlich 22.07.2008 00:24A wonderful idea. Will we receive email when it is done. Can I help? I am in the USA.
meherio68 24.07.2008 13:32I realize this comes very late, but about that early December day mentioned by Angela on July 3rd, I think she means the 6th of December : la Saint Nicolas ( which became Santa Claus...) and that is also big in other countries, like Switzerland, I think.
Saint Nicolas brings presents to good children and le Père Fouettard is supposed to bring retribution to the bad ones.
Saint Nicolas is told to have miraculously resurrected three little kids that had been slaughtered and put into a barrel with salt. If I remember right. So basically, this is big with kids, in some countries at least—seeing how it means presents and sweets...
Oh and, please don't take it badly but July 14th is never called "Independance Day"... Make it "Bastille Day", it makes more sense. Though there is always that recurring question about whether we are celebrating July 14th, 1789 or July 14th, 1790...
Is anybody going to put this together yet? How is worked out?
Florcita 31.07.2008 11:36oh yeah... which july 14th?? :)
In the NL is the same with sinterklaas on Dec 6. Big present time for the whole family. But that is in a few months time!
Errmmmm....I've been looking around and that link Sara posted is pretty complete, I think. the thing is that I dont realy know how to put it. Should we make like an excell sheet, where would that be placed?? questions!
meherio68 31.07.2008 15:48What about using the DaWanda Shopping Community. It could probably be added as a new section there...
Florcita 01.08.2008 15:33hey that is a good idea!
lasidi 05.08.2008 08:41Hi. In Spain, the tradidional date to receive christmas presents is on the 5 of January, when the kings come.. but of course now days (with world influence) most children get double presents or split with the 24 of december!
Also, someone mentioned the Eid. This is a muslim celebration and it follows the lunar calendar. This year it will be aroud the end of September (after the fasting month), but it moves forward about 15 days every year!
slackstitches 05.08.2008 11:51Hi, just a wee correction from Scotland. St. Andrews day is the 30th November, Burns Night is the 25th January for all the literary people (Robert Burns, National poet) and of course the whole of 2009 is to be known as "The Homecoming" for all those Scots who have been displaced over the world, for whatever reason, over the centuaries and have an interest in the land and region of their birth.
Our schools break up a lot earlier than England. Our children break up at the end of June and as a result are just about ready to go back to school when the rest of the UK are breaking up.
Blame the Olympic promotional email for waking me up.
Margaret
