FloraAustralia's Profile
About me
We’re a couple of designers who share a studio at the Langridge Design Centre, in Melbourne Australia. We both work as freelance designers and teachers. We work together and collaborate on a range of projects mainly for love, but some just for the money!
We spend a lot of time outdoors and share a passion for Australia’s strange and beautiful flowers.
Melissa: I'm originally from America and came to Australia to train as a jewellery designer. I went on to study industrial design and finished my studies in Milan, Italy. After finishing there I realised I didn’t want to redesign blenders, cars or washing machines, so I convinced my good friend Louise to start up a business with me to make up our own designs. I love handcrafting metals and experimenting with paper and plastics. Working with Louise is great as we get to combine our skills and interests and spend our downtime playing around with ideas and materials. Plus, she makes everything look nice and professional as she’s a graphic designer.
Louise: I'm a Kiwi a.k.a. New Zealander, and came here on my way to other places and have never left. I’ve been on a few excursions overseas but always come back to Australia. I studied fine art in Sydney and electronic design in Melbourne and have worked as a practicing artist and graphic designer for over 15 years. I’ve exhibited widely across Australia and my sculptures have travelled across a few oceans to find new homes. In the past I’ve generally worked alone on my art but since joining forces with Melissa it’s been lots of fun experimenting with unusual materials - things like waste off-cuts from factories - and learning and using new techniques that Melissa knows about because she’s an industrial designer.
