About me

Photography is the culmination of a great deal of knowledge and experience expressed at the end of one finger. I strive to obtain harmonious compositions that are absorbed unawares by the eye, but have enough presence to compel returning again and again.

I love line and the curves created by line and I love texture and the juxtaposition of textures. I use light to enhance these lines and those textures when making my photographs. In my minds eye I have the print, transposed from an object in front of my camera to its paper resting place.

My photography leans towards the early Pictorialist Photo-Secession led by Alfred Stieglitz in the USA and continuing the work of the English photographers who started the movement some twenty years earlier. The Pictorialist movement encouraged the manipulation of negatives and the use of alternative processes to arrive at a photograph that resembled art, mostly Impressionism which was in vogue at the time.

I can manipulate my images even before they become negatives thanks to modern software techniques, I spend hours doing it, to enhance that balance between darkness and light, to guide the eye to the subject, to increase or decrease contrast, sometimes to add grain and all done from that spark of imagination which began with the initial image capture.

I choose to work with the vintage Cyanotype process because it is simple, it does not use toxic chemicals and toning can introduce a range of colours. It also gives me complete control from making the image to producing the final print.

It's also the greatest fun I really enjoy making the images :-)
