About me
My name is Maya Manolova and I am free lanced artist, art critic and curator living and working in Varna, Bulgaria.
I graduated in 2005 at The National Academy of Arts in Sofia, Bulgaria, with a master degree in Art History. In December 2005 I succeeded a competition for submission in a PhD program at the Chair of History of Art to obtain a Doctor's degree. My major is History of modern art. The subject of my Doctor's thesis is "New tendencies in the art of artists from Varna in the end of XX and the beginning of XXI century".
Meantime I am also working as a freelance artist and illustrator focused in the field of painting (oil, acryllic, tempera, water colors), crafts and photography.Here I want to present to your attention one part of my artistic production.
Presented works are inspired by the restless serpentine line of european Secession, fused with ethno (indian, african, japanese) ornamentation. Flat use of water colors gives to compositions particular decorativeness.The most interpreted motive is the woman's figure. I work with very specifical deformation of the body, that forms unique (miniature, cartoon, illustration)style. My technique consists tempera, water colors acrylic and oil paints on professional aquarel paper.Commented works are made in the period between 2001 and 2009. Original size vary between 10/20/30 cm. My handmade jewelry is truly unique and one of a kind. Each piece is individually designed and handcrafted by me as a peace of art. All my designs are one of a kind and never duplicated, so if you purchase a piece of my jewelry, you can rest assured that no one else will have one like it! I work with paper, different kind of shells, rise, wood, ceramic by painting it and arranging it to create unique jewelry pieces. My creations are about 2-7 cm in size. I also work with Dimitar Manolov-famous bulgarian artist, who works in the field of landscape, marine, nude, still life and figural composition.
In the early 80's the author’s work is restricted in using the language of abstract trends since the middle of XX-th century, focusing on lyrical expressionism. Image tends to minimize the color sign is limited to monochrome plates, special attention is paid to the texture. Visible in the works is the tend to cancellation of the plans through targeted elimination of the thee-dimensional representation and attention is fixed in search for new links and imaginary spaces. Thus the abstact language is used as a sublimation of the creative potential of its author.
In the early 90’s, the artist left this working method and refers to more traditional subjects such as landscape and still life. This period is characterized by increasing role of the surface by gross impasto technique, which enhances the volume. Large expressive masks alternate with flatter resolved fields and thus achieve dynamic plans.
Occurrence of the second half of the 90 -th years marks calming and balansing the rich, elemental and multi relief in favor of the soft air treated volumes. Instead of stormy seas on the canvas of the author appear misty and entice female figures. Since then, the woman becomes a core element around which the author realize his searches. Woman as a state of completely balanceand harmony and infinite source of life.
