About me

Welcome to my About me, I established Wheeldale Woolcrafts in 2004, in Wheeldale a quiet valley in North Yorkshire. (pictured above with some yarn). I run the business part time doing all the jobs from caring for the sheep to packing up the orders and maintaining my web page. When I'm not working with wool I work in Countryisde Management. Wheeldale is a very remote dale (we haven't got mains electricity or water) but there is the amazing countryside and changing seasons to inspire my work.
I am an experienced hand spinner and feltmaker but mainly a passionate and prolific dyer. I use natural dyes from plants collected in the field, garden, moors and nearby woods fix with alum which is safe for me to use and the environment and ecosafe acid dyes (which are colour fast). All my dyeing is done at home, most of it on the Aga and some in the workshop (if it's a plant which could be harmful if eaten). Both the yarn and tops are dyed in small batches or painted by hand.
Some of my wool comes from my own flock of 7 sheep, there's Sophia my first sheep a pedigree Shetland sheep with an amazing soft fleece, her lamb from 3 years ago Brownie who is always escaping. Esme a little North Ronaldsay sheep.
Jemima a beautiful black Jacobs X North Ronaldsay and her new lambs Skye and Iona. Chazza a huge Cheviot X Swaledale who was a pet lamb, all the sheep are kept for their wool.
Environment.
Because of my background in environmental science I aim to make the business as environmentally freindly as possible by minimising waste and energy use, using only environmentally friendly washing liquids for the fibres and using local products.
