Wrapping Paper & Furoshiki

  • Learn More About Wrapping Paper & Furoshiki

Wrapping paper and furoshiki are both popular methods for covering presents to enhance the surprise of receiving a gift. However, the two methods use widely different materials to achieve this goal.

Often also referred to as gift wrap, wrapping paper is a flat material that's easily cut and folds nicely around gifts. One side of the wrapping paper is usually blank or marked with straight gridlines to guide cutting. The other side typically displays a creative pattern that represents the occasion for giving the gift.

Originating centuries ago in Japan, furoshiki is a wrapping cloth used to conceal gifts. While wrapping paper is usually closed using tape, the art form of furoshiki usually involves tying the gift closed with a lovely knot or securing the bundle with fasteners. Much like other gift wrapping options, you can find furoshiki fabric from Etsy shops in a wide variety of dazzling colors and brilliant patterns.
