Learn More About Watch Bands & Straps

Changing a watch strap is easy with a replaceable watch band and a few tools. Changing the strap on your timepiece rejuvenates an antique or makes your everyday ticker feel like a brand-new watch. Switch out the band every season or have different ones for dressy occasions and casual outings. Depending on your watch, you may want a specific watch band for physical activities. Changing a strap allows you to transform the look of your favorite accessory based on mood, outfit, or occasion.

The method of attaching a watch band depends on if the spring bar is inside the strap or if the strap weaves behind the spring bar. The spring bar connects to the protruding parts on the sides of the watch—also called the lug.

    To attach a spring bar:

    1. Press one spring into the lug hole.
    2. Use a spring bar tool or flat screwdriver to hold the other pin down.
    3. Carefully slide the second end of the bar into the other lug hole and release.
    4. Wiggle the strap around until you hear two satisfying clicks. That sweet sound of success is your strap locking into place.

If you’re using a fabric strap like a NATO strap:

    1. Ensure the spring bars are in place and line up your strap so the buckle faces the same direction as the 12.
    2. Weave the strap over the spring bar, behind the watch, and back up over the other bar, leaving the short end to dangle.
    3. Tighten until the watch is at the end of the buckle, then pass the long end back through the ring of the short end.
    4. Pull it snug and you’re ready to roll.

The watch industry is often introducing new ways to accessorize your wrist with a wide array of materials. Here are a few of the most popular watch band materials:

    • Metal watch bands: Metal watch bands are loved for their high durability and classy finish. If you want a timepiece that pairs with a suit by day and a mask and cape by night, stainless steel is your trusty sidekick. Steel can be polished or tinted black for a stealthy appearance. If you want to complete the daytime billionaire look, increase the sophistication with precious metals like gold and silver.
    • Leather watch bands: Leather comes in various textures, colors, and hides. From the feel to the smell, it’s hard to beat the natural appeal of such a versatile material. Smokey and earthy, leather exudes confidence no matter your style. It may age and wear over time, but that just gives it more character.
    • Rubber watch bands: Rubber resists sweat and water, making it a favored choice for active lifestyles and mermaids. Whether you’re a runner rocking a smartwatch chock-full of health apps or a swimmer looking to increase your lap speed, rubber bands let you exercise worry-free.
    • Silicone watch bands: Silicone is like a plush version of rubber. This pliable synthetic material won’t warp, and it’s soft enough on the skin to wear on a night out. It’s also resistant to moisture, making it a comparable alternative to rubber for the exercise-inclined—or the armchair reclined.
    • Nylon watch bands: Nylon straps are the wear-all-day bands. The you-can-do-anything-and-still-know-the-time strap. They’re pleasantly breathable in hot and humid climates, making them perfect for tropical vacations when you want to forget you’re wearing a watch.
